Description
This is my hometown, I left there in 1997. I Miss it! Picture was taken on October 09.2009
Cumberland was called "The Gateway to the West". Many travelers from the east heading west came through Cumberland. Ports of Baltimore, Washington DC and surrounding areas were the ones to travel through. Cumberland is steeped in history. A most beautiful setting and Historical place in Maryland. To name a few things, it was the beginning of the C&O Canal which only went from Cumberland to Washington D.C., shipping goods back and forth the 184.5 mile stretch. Youngsters would walk mules from lock to lock. When it was built, it was built by picks, shovels, ax, saws, wheelbarrows and strong backed laborers. The canal operated from 1831 to 1924.
Another excellent, historical topic to mention is George Washington had a headquarters there in the fort called " Fort Cumberland". His cabin is still there, which is the only building standing from the original, Fort Cumberland" His long standing career started here.
Fort Cumberland was a post during the French and Indian War.
The Church in the center of the photograph is: the Historic, Emmanuel Episcopal Church,
which was built in 1849-1851, over tunnels and a foundation of the original Fort Cumberland. Yes the tunnels are sometimes open to walk through.
Cumberland is also known for its rail road The B&O, Chessie system. There is a steam train that takes folks from Cumberland to Frostburg, Md., A wonderful experience any time of the year. There is much more to immerse oneself into history at Cumberland, Maryland and close surrounding areas.
